On the way to my second class, I started to approach a door as a student in front of me did the same. He opened the door and, quite surprisingly, held it open for me. (Little did he know that this simple act would land him as a main character in my blog....) Now I'm not exaggerating when I say that in all seven weeks I've been at Sac State, he was probably the first guy to step aside and let me go first. It was so refreshing and uplifting.
The second "small" incident occurred during choir break when we have five or ten minutes to grab a drink of water. I got in line behind four or five others for the drinking fountain, but almost immediately a man ushered me ahead, saying, "ladies first!"
One thought I had from these acts was that gentlemanly kindness is being taught out of our society. There's an undermining attitude from women that says, "I can do it myself! I can do anything a man can do! Do you think I'm weak or something?" This really saddens me because I (as well as many other women) can see that there are truly sincere men who just want to serve. They just want to show kindness even in the smallest of gestures. (And to any guys reading this - thank you!)
Another thought I had was that we should always treasure those special little memories. Those small acts of kindness are like patches of sunlight on a cold, cloudy day. Bright, warm, and occasional. We can either dwell on the angry, irritated, stressed people we meet throughout the day. Or we can keep those kindnesses tucked away in our minds and revisit them like an old, comforting quilt.
Should we choose to be thankful for them, they can dispel the drudgery of the day and inspire us to pass along love to others.
Well...that's it for now. Good night. :)
