In our culture, we nurture the idea that love should be effortless, and if it stops being so, just give up. We "fall into love," but later, we might just "fall out of love." We "make up" and "break up." We don't take into account that love requires compromise or sacrifice. We just want love to give us that warm, fuzzy feeling without the work.
Now stop reading. Go listen to "Dancing in the Minefields." Yep, right now.
Okay, now compare that song to "Marry You" by Bruno Mars. I just heard it in the mall today, and personally, I think it's a horrible song. Yes, it has a great beat and a catchy melody...but consider the words: "looking for something dumb to do...I think I want to marry you...if you want to break up, that's cool" What??!! Sorry to rant here, but I think we can and should aim for something better than what popular society puts forth.
And God makes that possible. He exemplifies deep, faithful, sacrificial love every single moment of our lives. He sent His Son to save us. He gives us the power to love Him and love others.
So let's not look for "something dumb to do," but walk with each other "in the shadowlands till the shadows disappear."
